OpenAI is preparing to make its GPT-5.6 model family more broadly available after initially offering a limited preview to select partners and organizations.
The new series includes three models: GPT-5.6 Sol, GPT-5.6 Terra, and GPT-5.6 Luna. Sol is the flagship and most capable; Terra is a balanced, lower-cost option; and Luna is the fastest and most cost-efficient of the three.
OpenAI’s launch announcement confirmed the phased approach: limited preview first, wider availability in the coming weeks, no exact public date yet.
The cautious rollout comes down to safety coordination. OpenAI said it previewed the models with the US government before launch and, at the government’s request, started with a small group of trusted partners rather than going broad immediately.
During the preview, GPT-5.6 is available through the OpenAI API and Codex for approved organizations. According to OpenAI’s Help Center, the model family isn’t in ChatGPT yet during this phase, and individual users can’t join through public enrollment or a waitlist.
That makes this one of OpenAI’s more closely watched launches of the year, arriving as AI companies push hard to improve coding, research, professional workflow, and cybersecurity capabilities while facing real pressure to handle safety risks responsibly.
OpenAI says GPT-5.6 advances performance across software engineering, computer use, professional knowledge work, scientific research, and cybersecurity. Sol also introduces a new “max” reasoning effort for deeper reasoning and an “ultra” mode that uses subagents for complex tasks.
The strongest claims center on coding, biology, and cybersecurity. OpenAI says Sol sets a new benchmark on Terminal-Bench 2.1, which tests command-line workflows requiring planning, iteration, and tool coordination.
On the science side, GPT-5.6 Sol reportedly outperforms GPT-5.5 on GeneBench v1, a benchmark for long-horizon genomics and quantitative biology tasks, while using fewer tokens to do so.
Cybersecurity is the most sensitive area, and the one most responsible for the careful rollout. OpenAI says Sol is its most capable model yet for vulnerability research and security analysis. More capability means more scrutiny.
In the GPT-5.6 system card, OpenAI says the models represent a meaningful step up in cybersecurity capability but don’t reach the company’s highest “Critical” risk level. Sol and Terra can find vulnerabilities and pieces of exploits, but in testing, neither autonomously completed full end-to-end attacks against hardened targets.
OpenAI has built a layered safety system around the GPT-5.6 family: model-level protections, real-time checks during generation, account-level signals, monitoring, enforcement tools, and additional safeguards for sensitive biology and cybersecurity requests. The goal is to support legitimate uses, defensive security work, code review, vulnerability research, patch development, debugging, and security education, while making prohibited offensive activity harder to carry out and easier to detect.
Pricing reflects how OpenAI is positioning the three models. Sol costs $5 per million input tokens and $30 per million output tokens. Terra comes in at $2.50 per million input and $15 per million output. Luna is the cheapest at $1 per million input and $6 per million output.
The model family also brings more predictable prompt caching, explicit cache breakpoints, a 30-minute minimum cache life, and cached reads still getting a 90% discount. For developers running models at scale, those details matter as much as raw performance. Cost, latency, and predictable caching often determine whether a model actually works for large-scale business use.

The delayed broader rollout puts the tension facing AI labs in plain view. Developers and enterprises want access to frontier models as fast as possible. For now, GPT-5.6 is a controlled preview, not a full public launch. If the next few weeks go smoothly, it could become OpenAI’s next major frontier model release across professional and developer workflows.
But the rollout itself signals something worth noting. How the most powerful AI models reach the public is no longer just a question of when they’re ready; it’s shaped by safety reviews, government coordination, enterprise readiness, and pricing. Performance still matters. It’s just not the whole story anymore.
